The North Carolina Writing Instruction System was designed to provide students with opportunities to have a variety of experiences with writing throughout the curriculum and throughout the school year.

2009 - 2010 Pilot for the Writing Instruction System
In May of 2009, the State Board of Education approved the proposal for the 2009-2010 Writing Instruction System (pdf, 32kb).

Changes to the Writing Instruction System for 2009-2010 include:

  • allowing flexible windows for student writing samples to be composed
  • allowing teachers, in consultation with students, to choose the content-specific writing assignments
  • not restricting the use of word processing tools (such as spell check) on assignments.
  • opening the centrally-hosted online repository to all districts statewide, or any school(s) within a district.

Online Pilot for Writing System - Now Enrolling
The Online pilot for the Writing Instruction System is open to all who are interested for the 2009 - 2010 school year. Districts or schools interested in piloting this innovative online approach to writing instruction should contact Angela Quick, Deputy Chief Academic Officer, at aquick@dpi.state.nc.us.
